I got a ride into a 2007 335i coupe with the m package and a tuned chip.

We found a stretch near my house and my friend pushed it. I took a ride into a boosted RX7, a v8 S4 and I was like meh, but his car was easily the fastest car I ever got a ride into or that's what I thought. He laughed and said, you haven't seen anything yet. The system wasn't ON. He turned it on and put the boost to the max. Got to the stretch again and pushed it. I never felt anything like it. NEVER!! It's was like a jet!!!! I was pushed in the seat! It never happened to me before. My views on BMWs changed...and my low power love is ruined.

The early 335i's are so unreliable, however. So your friends is most likely already broken.

Why I love the 335i. I'm assuming it was a JB4 tune (Very common) so it was making around 400hp. It's a really great engine.

Even the later N55s aren't the greatest for reliability.

They had some recalls done because the turbos kept failing, I'm pretty sure. The reason they went with the twin-scroll turbo in the '09 and later models was to replace that engine.

Agreed, they're not. But I've heard/read countless stories and such about how much they break. I've always wondered why they were so damn cheap used, now I know why.

That might be it, although I'm not too familiar with engine. Also, a tune probably won't help reliability.

JB4 + downpipes + exhaust = awesome car that sounds awesome. Love 335i's. The reliability isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Everything is also warrantied for a long time now that bmw acknowledged the common problems.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > Brian Silvestro
02/13/2014 at 17:35

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, not exactly. As you'll recall, they used the N54 in the 1 series M coupe and the 335is, which were produced well after the N55 took over duty in the regular 335s. The choice to go with the N55 had more to do with fuel efficiency and use across multiple platforms than reliability and, certainly, performance. Once the N54 got the fatter wastegate actuator rods, replacement high pressure fuel pumps and redesigned injectors it was a lot more reliable. ...and it still remains the better engine for tuning.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > BKRM3
02/13/2014 at 17:38

Kinja'd!!!1

Well shows how much I know! I stand corrected. The 1 Series M is my second favorite BMW ever made so it must be true.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > RotaryLover
02/13/2014 at 17:42

Kinja'd!!!2

I had one. 2007 E92 335. 6 speed manual, of course. Had a Cobb tune and BMW performance exhaust. For the first three years I owned it (2009-2012) it was an absolute nightmare . Thank god it was under warranty, or I'd be living in a cardboard box. From spring 2012 until I sold it in spring of 2013 it was "reliable" on the street but I didn't trust it enough to keep it for track use (the one weekend I tracked it I kept getting low boost errors, reduced power...I think it was a wastegate sticking open). Bought a (slower) E92 M3 and have never looked back.

That torque delivery IS nuts though, right? I used to make passengers light headed. The only other car I've ever had give me that sensation was a mildly-tuned GT-R.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > Brian Silvestro
02/13/2014 at 17:54

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a good car for sure. A good friend of mine has a 1 series M and he tracks the hell out of it. He just installed a half cage and race buckets actually. He's never had any trouble with his N54 at all. I think with that car they really got the cooling right, which was another notorious issue. You might have seen my other comment on this post about my 2007 335, which was about the least reliable car on the planet for 75% of the time I owned it.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > BKRM3
02/13/2014 at 17:58

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I just recommended it. It's good to hear that they at least perfected the engine for the 1M, those cars deserve to last forever. I'm sure you prefer the M3 over the 335, since the cost of ownership most likely outweigh the speed benefits. (I've heard time and time again that the 335 could easily be faster/more agile than the M3 with tuning)

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > Brian Silvestro
02/13/2014 at 18:08

Kinja'd!!!1

More agile? Ehhhh, I guess if you throw a ton of money at it. The M3 is pretty perfect. The 335 can DEFINITELY be faster in a straight line though, with very little money. Basically you need a tune, a set of catless downpipes and a high flow air filter. That's like...maybe $1,500 total (could be done for less with used parts) and it would beat my M3 between stoplights all day long. Alas, they're not built for holding up on the track and I wanted a car that could do that pretty much right out of the box. Plus, everything about the M just feel "special"...it's a much nicer car. Not to mention they hold their value a lot better. I lost my shirt on that darn 335, even having bought it used. The M3 has never been about ridiculous speed. It's just fast enough to do what it needs to do on track!

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > BKRM3
02/13/2014 at 18:11

Kinja'd!!!0

In the middle of reading I realized they use mostly different (re: more expensive/higher quality) parts on the M cars as opposed to the regular ones. Therefore the M cars will probably last longer and not break (as much) under heavy usage. I really want an E90 M3 (the sedan), it's easily my favorite M3. Hopefully the prices will get low enough after the new one comes out.

Kinja'd!!! BKRM3 > Brian Silvestro
02/13/2014 at 18:20

Kinja'd!!!0

Hey, I own one of those! Hopefully the prices go UP after the new one comes out and everyone realizes that the ludicrously awesome S65 v8 was the best thing ever. Just save up and you'll be able to get one eventually. The 2008s are going for like $35k - people spend more than that every day for an EOS (god knows why...), I'd be surprised if they drop much more. Plus they only made the sedan from 2008 to 2011, so there are WAY fewer of them around than the coupes.

You should feel the novillo leather used in the M btw...it's like butter compared to the dakota leather used in the non-Ms. Not that I care a whole lot about that, it's just one example of the difference in quality.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > BKRM3
02/13/2014 at 18:23

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh god I have felt that leather, I know exactly what you're talking about. Super ultra mega soft. The one thing I don't like about the '08s is the prefacelifted rear end on the sedans. I had a '11 328i so I like the newer asses a lot more. But if one comes around and it's a good price then it's certainly not a deal breaker. Eos's are cars for successful businesswomen who waited too long to get married.

Did you know that your dad was thisclose to buying one? He ended up getting a Mito Quadrifoglio Verde. Eh, you should be fine with a stock 1er or 3er.

I was going for an 135i. I'm still not sure if I did the right choice.

It's your personal preference, man. Don't let the others decide for you. It's the expenses you have to worry about. Insurance, maintenance, and all that shit.

Maintenance, I can do it myself. I'm a mechanic. It's insurance that I have an issue with. I probably will put it for only 6 months with the basic.

If you get the 1er, what will you do with your other cars? It's more expensive to insure all 3 of them at once.

The mazda 3 has nothing to be done on. The secret that I've been hiding...is that my father pays for it. He wanted me to have a reliable car for everything. The Miata is payed and the insurance is cheap, but it's falling apart. I wanna get rid of it and get the 1er.

How can it fall apart if you're a mechanic?

You fix one thing, something else breaks. Since I do not care anymore, it's getting worst and worst.

Pretty bad. I'm sick of a throat infection, the financing on the bmw 135i I wanted was approved but the insurance just chopped my head off. Work just plain sucks...I lost my motivation. I see black.

Throat infection? Helmut, have you been snogging with sluts at your birthday party over the weekend? Snogging with a stranger can cause strep throat. * sees hickeys on Helmut's neck * Son? Explain this to me.

By the way, did you see my resignation letter?

Mein Gott, you Mudblood filth! The only stranger I'd let you snoggle with is her !

Kinja'd!!!

Really, get well soon, Helmut. Drink tea with lemon, ginger, cinnamon, and honey. Avoid salty and solid food and drinks. You'll feel better in two days or three. :)

You can see my resignation letter by going right here .

Do some research. N54s are GREAT motors. The turbos have wastegate rattle , which doesn't mean anything. The turbos/engine are both extremely reliable. The fuel pump is known to go bad after awhile. And the intake manifold has a carbon buildup problem. Thats really the worse few things , and none of which are even too extreme. JB tunes are also not known to cause any issues. I have no idea where you are getting your information from but you are incorrect.
